Programme outline

  • Two-year (four semester, 120 ECTS) consecutive degree programme based on a BSc degree in the same or a closely related subject (see Application and Admission).
  • English as main teaching language.
  • Organized modularly (block and semester-long courses).
  • Broad offer of modules from different fields of research across faculties (Biology, Agricultural Sciences, Forest Sciences & Forest Ecology, Geoscience & Geography).
  • Emphasis on practical teaching: Excursions, field courses, lab training, training in taxonomy, collections, science communication, …
  • Three main areas of specialization:
    • A. Ecology (with specification in plants or animals): Functionality of biodiversity
    • B. Evolution: Development of biodiversity
    • C. Conservation Biology: Preserving biodiversity
  • Master's thesis (6 months) on the basis of experiments or field studies, with a preparatory module: Research colloquia and project management (M.Biodiv.417).
Note: Demand from students for Conservation Biology is high – it might not be possible to take all the desired courses as planned.
